Discharge During Pregnancy
Hits for this post:1061
This is one most embarrassing topic to talk about but it’s common during pregnancy. I guess due to age, hormone changes, stress level and my diet, this time round I experienced the worst discharge as compare to the 2 previous time, which I don’t remember suffering from it. Yesterday my gynae prescribed another single dose of Diflucan (antifungal medication for me)
Found in Dr Sears site on the physical change during pregnancy is the increased of vaginal discharge
A milky, slightly odorous vaginal discharge the consistency of egg white is normal during pregnancy, and often occurs in increasing amounts as your pregnancy progresses. This mucoid discharge resembles premenstrual vaginal discharge, except that it’s heavier and constant. The same mechanisms (pregnancy hormones and increased blood flow to the tissues) that prepare the vagina for the passage of the baby are also responsible for this increase in secretions. Many women change their underwear several time a day, or wear panty liners to stay comfortably dry. Vaginal yeast infections may recur throughout your pregnancy. While irritating to you, they are harmless to your baby, although a baby can pick up a yeast infection while traveling through the vagina during birth. Yeast can cause a mild infection of the mucous membranes of baby’s mouth, called thrush, which generally appears around a week after delivery. Thrush can spread to the mother’s nipples and cause pain and tenderness during feedings. Occasionally, a harmless yeast dermatitis may also develop in the newborn and can be treated easily with over-the-counter anti-fungal creams.
There’s also a self help methods to reduce the frequency of yeast/fungal infections
- Cut down on refined sugar in your diet.
- Eat yogurt that contains live
Lactobacillus acidophilus cultures or take oral acidophilus tablets or powder.
- Shower off the discharge — a handheld showerhead is useful. (Because of the danger of introducing air into your circulatory system, or damage from high water pressure, douching is not advised during pregnancy.)
- Use a pad or panty shield.
- Avoid feminine hygiene sprays, which can irritate vaginal tissues.
- Wear loose cotton panties until your symptoms are gone.
- Avoid tight jeans, exercise pants, leotards, and swimsuits.
- Wear a nightgown and no underwear to bed instead of pajamas.
- Wear skirts rather than slacks, and skip the pantyhose whenever possible.
- Relieve intense itching by applying cold water compresses and sitting in a warm bath to which a cup of cornstarch and a half-cup of baking soda are added.
- Try the over-the-counter Aveeno in your bath, but avoid soaking in substances that may irritate the vagina, such as bubble bath and perfumed soaps.
