JS’s Schooling

More headache to come….

SIL was kind enough to go over to the preschools are her area to do the enquiry for me. There were not many, only 4. One is out of my choice, the other one, we didn’t know where. I have put the Montessori as my top list. However upon enquiry, we decided to forgo it, as the fees is just too high. For WH itself, the fee is RM400 per month and JS RM430. If we were to enroll the kids to that school, will have to fork out RM830 per month!! My purpose is more for them (WH especially) to kill time and to socialize and that will only be for short term (3 months) so I don’t think it’s feasible to pay that amount for just 3 months. After that enquiry, I have decided that just JS alone will continue preschool as to prepare her for P1 next year, instead of idle at home and get lazy when mummy will have a lot to do in the next few months and won’t really have the time to homeschool her.  Will be keeping WH at home, doing partial homeschool if times permit and only let him continue schooling next school term.

Anyhow, we have only left one choice. It’s not really my choice as I know they are academic driven etc but when hubby drove there to have the look from outside, to him it seems ok as the school looks clean. (Well, to my hubby, he isn’t really concern about the teaching method etc) . The fees was ok, RM200 per month and SIL actually enroll and paid on our behalf.

I actually didn’t want to do it that hastily. I know my SIL has a good intention on helping us , but for me I really prefer to go to the school and do observation myself. When she offer to help us to register, I didn’t detest as at the same time, I was also thinking, why so fussy, after all, it’s only for short term 3 months …boy , I regretted so much.

Only after registration, I found out that they DO NOT HAVE a mandarin medium class. Unlike what JS is attending now, eventhough in a English preschool, there’s one special Chinese Class for those who are going to Chinese school next year. Mandarin is the main language used to conduct lesson. But this school that SIL has helped us register, do not have such class!! They only have extra Mandarin class after school daily for 1/2 hour. I really doubt this kind of exposure will help JS to pick up the language more as we do not speak Mandarin at home. Even now , her spoken Mandarin is very English-ish with all the wrong grammar which I have to correct her. I really don’t know how she’s going to learn where it’s back to square one as English is used.  I called the principal, and she ensured me that there will be no problem for my JS and asked me to go observe the class after we have moved there. I don’t know if after observation and if I’m not happy with it, I can withdraw JS from the school.

When come to children’s education and school choice, my ILs and hub really are clueless on what to look out for.

Then there’s her P1 schooling issue. I have yet to go to the school to appeal for a transfer. Can only get it done next week. Only after I have submitted the appeal form and approved by the ministry, then only I can cancel her placing at current school and register her at the new school nearby our house. I just hope by that time, there’s still placing in the new school and I hope the ministry will approve our application, because we do not have utilities bills to support our transfer application. I wonder if S&P as well as the letter of VP works in this case….

Elaine, for the appeal form that we filled in, one of the reasons that you can state as a reason for your appeal is the distance or moved house. If for any of these reasons, you are to submit either your latest utility bills or the first page of your S&P. In your case it is not an appeal to change school but a request for transfer but I think it looks like you can use your S&P instead of your utility bills as proof of your new address.

    Thanks for the info MG
