We received this book from book depository a week before we are bout to head to US for our vacation. San Fran is one of our stop.

When I ordered this book, I knew nothing about the story line. I didn’t read any of the book reviews of the synopsis of the story. The reason I’ve ordered it was because WH loves transportation, well I thought this would be nice specifically for him. The other reason was that the author Virginia Lee Burton of this book is an award winning author. Along with her other books, this is one of the book that is more suitable for older readers.

The book came, I read to them and personally got hooked to the book too. I love the tiny details in the drawing, so attentive and careful and definitely we (the children and me) had walked through another history lesson. We then google more about San Francisco Cable Cars and read more about it. I told Wh that SF will be one of the place we will be visiting and hopefully we can take a ride on the Cable Car too.

When I read through the book, it had mentioned about in the late 1940s the cable cars were almost stripped from San Francisco and it took petitions and ballot measures by the citizens and fans of San Fran near and far to keep these symbols of the city in operation. I can’t help to relate it to our situation of Jalan Sultan. Where our government are tearing down heritage buildings to make way for development. Activists had taken action trying to safeguard the heritage building. But unlike the democratic US, where the people’s voice are heard in a fair way, ours, a democratic country, but not very democratically run by the current government, never ever takes the people voice seriously. I can’t help to feel a pang of pain comparing the two incidents.
